The Nature Boardwalk at South Pond
Linoln Park Zoo
Chicago, Illinois

tellermadsen was one of a team of consultants, architects and designers brought together for the complete renovation of South Pond, a feature which has been part of Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo since its inception. Interpretive signs deal with the relationship of humans and the environment, from the microcosm of the pond ecosystem to the cumulative impact our small actions have on the whole planet. Sign panels include illustration and photographic representations of what visitors can observe in nature as well as what is happening beneath the surface of the pond that they can't see. Interpretive signage is accessible as visitors travel the new boardwalk which meanders the pond's vegetated edge. Giant plant and animal images are direct-printed on the recycled boardwalk planks, including one vertical section where children can compare their "wingspan" with that of a heron (Image 7 of 8).
